So this definitely wasn't one of our best planned trips, but crikey it was beautiful!
Before heading off on our trip to Nice, we had discussed all of the day trips we would ideally like to take during our week, and we both agreed that it would be lovely to get up onto higher ground for a day.
On the recommendation of the tourist office we decided to catch a bus from Gare de Nice-Ville to Saint-Martin-Vésubie situated in the mountains, around 15km from the Italian border.
The journey through the mountains was stunning. It was also so interesting watching all of the different people getting on and off the bus at the tiny villages along the way.
On the bus we got talking to a young French guy who was asking about our plans for the day. He dropped into conversation that there was only one bus each day to Saint-Martin-Vésubie - news to us! Our new friend explained that the timetable we had been given was out of date and there would be only one bus back to Nice that day!
Being our usual optimistic selves and slightly hoping that the guy had got confused or that the bus back would leave early in the evening, we were still excitedly discussing our plans to visit the Wolf Park and hopefully get some good views of the mountains.
Upon arriving into the town with the help of our phrase book, we attempted to ask the bus driver when the last bus to Nice was. With the help of another bilingual coach passenger we were told it was at 1.30pm... in one hour's time, fantastic.
With only one hour to take in the whole town we pretty much ran around on a photo tour, trying to take in as much of the scenery as we could.
Perched on the edge of the mountains, it was just as picturesque as we had hoped.
Although it was a bummer that we couldn't have stayed longer, the journey in itself was one of our holiday highlights albeit being pretty scary at times - crumbling cliff faces, tunnels that only are only wide enough for one vehicle etc.
But as they say sometimes it's about the journey not the destination ha!
