Beautiful Bank Holiday Weekend in Cornwall

Tuesday, 5 September 2017

It was just one of those weekends that you wish would last forever!

After a mammoth journey down straight from work on Friday we arrived at the campsite just after 11pm - who knew that bank holiday traffic would be bad?! We managed to get the tent up without killing each other - a lot of lip biting haha! But when we woke up in a stunning peaceful green field in the middle of Cornwall all of the stress of last night was forgotten!

On Saturday we decided to spend the day around our old university town - we were so desperate to walk along familiar streets and see what had changed since we left 3 years ago! This day was filled with lots of eating - a bacon sarnie on the pier is always a great way to start the day, and of course lots of Rattler. We were truly so lucky with the weather - which didn't help with the sinking feeling of why did we actually leave this crazy beautiful place?!

In the evening it was a quick shower and change of clothes (with a glass of prosecco  of course!) then we were off on a walk from Maenporth beach along the costal path to Falmouth for dinner. Such a beautiful walk passing through a couple of beaches and even seeing a wedding on Swanpool - serious wedding goals! We watched the bride and groom float out in a wooden rowing boat it was so romantic!

When I was younger I spent a lot of time in Cornwall with my family and was desperate to show Sam of my favourite places that he hadn't visited yet! Another sunny day meant that it was the perfect opportunity to put the roof down on my little car and enjoy the scenic country roads! Yes I did feel like we were in some kind of rom-com!!

First up on our mini road trip was Porthcurno - one of my favourite beaches in Cornwall and maybe actually in the world! I had never seen it quite this busy before but still nothing to hide the stunning white beach a blue sea - what a view! We parked at the top of the hill near the Minack Theatre and climbed down to the beach via the coastal path, a great way to see the beach from above. After a little paddle we were both beginning to get a little hungry and  a pasty was definitely on our radar.

A short drive round to the cute little town of Sennen where had a cheeky half in the sun followed by a delicious pasty from the Boatswain shop as recommended  by a local couple we met.

As an avid Poldark watcher I was desperate to see some tin mines and get a real life feel for 'proper' Cornwall. I had stayed in St Just with my family many years ago but had really forgotten just how dramatic the coastline along there really is! We visited the Bottalack mines which are now owned by the National Trust. The mines are the supposed home of Poldark's  Wheal Leisure in the TV series and it wasn't difficult to see why they had chosen this particular mine. We spent a really special afternoon literally one the highlights of my summer, such a peaceful place to be. We were the only people there, and it honestly felt 1 million miles away from work and the stresses of life.

We finished our afternoon watching the sunset behind the hill in Portleven with another half enjoying the happy bank holiday atmosphere.

Oh we do love you Cornwall! Counting down the days until we pop down for another long weekend!
